Cool Summer Cave To Warm Winter Sauna

Deep in Central Texas, a modern pool overlooking the San Marcos River was the perfect backyard retreat, until one side of the pool began to settle on the hillside it was built on. The homeowners called RicoRock to fix the issue and stabilize the area. After excavating about six feet below ground, the team realized they had an opportunity to do more than just repair the damage; they could create something unique. With experience building custom grottos, they decided to turn the rebuilt space into a cave waterfall that could also function as a sauna.

Cave waterfalls are a popular pool upgrade, and converting one into a sauna for colder months is easier than most people think. A wood-fired stove provides heat, and removable plexiglass or framed panels can close off the openings to keep the warmth inside. The structure is built with concrete block and finished inside and out with RicoRock panels, giving it a natural stone look while remaining durable and efficient. The result is a multifunctional space, cool and shaded during hot Texas summers, and warm and cozy in the winter. In the summer, it offers a refreshing escape from the sun while keeping you close to the pool. In the winter, it transforms into a comfortable heated retreat, allowing the backyard to be enjoyed year-round.

Caves naturally feel private and relaxing, like a hidden retreat in your own backyard. When combined with the well-known benefits of a sauna: stress relief, improved circulation, muscle recovery, and overall wellness, it becomes more than just a design feature. After swimming laps or spending the day with family, stepping into a private sauna cave is an easy and enjoyable way to unwind just steps from the pool.
